Standard Objects
"Standard objects" is my term for items that are common and always built to a consistent set of dimensions and other specifications.
There are many advantages of building with and in reference to these objects:
- Parts are easy to find for construction and repair.
- Other designers are designing things referencing the same specifications, so you are automatically part of a wider design "system."
- The specifications are often the product of many historical iterations. You immediately benefit from all of that work.
Some examples of "standard objects":
- milk crates
- LEGO pieces
- Intermodal containers
- 19-inch rack
- Mason jar
